EPFL - The HYDROPOWER_EUROPE forum devoted to the development of hydropower in the next decades

      | More

HYDROPOWER-EUROPE is a project selected by European Commission after the call H2020 LC-SC3-CC-4-2018, whose the scope is “bringing together stakeholders of the hydropower sector in a forum” to develop a roadmap of research and innovation for new hydropower technologies and innovative mitigation measures. The International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) leads the project. The core partners of the consortium are spanning the whole value chain, they are: European Association for Storage of Energy (EASE), European Renewable Energies Federation (EREF), Association of European Renewable Energy Research Centres (EUREC), International Hydropower Association (IHA), Samui France SARL (SAMUI), VGB PowerTech e.V. (VGB) and ZABALA Brussels SPRL (ZABALA). HYDROPOWER-EUROPE has 3 years to achieve this goal (from October 2018 to September 2021). The relevant stakeholders will be consulted online and through regional, European and international workshops by the networks of the consortium. The consultation process is based on three loops of consultation activity. The first loop will initiate the consultation and the first draft of Research and Innovation Agenda completed with initial consultation outputs. The second loop of consultation is on synthesis of the current status of technology and required priorities. The last loop of consultation will focuse on drafts of the Research and Innovation Agenda and the Technology Roadmap.

TEW - HYDROPOWER EUROPE

According to the International Hydropower Association (IHA)1 and Eurostat2 , Hydropower remains one of the single largest source of renewable electricity across Europe, generating an estimated 600 TWh of clean electricity in 2017, about 15% of Europe’s electricity generation (10.3% for EU-28). With more than 30% of hydropower potential still untapped, this clean source of energy has all the characteristics to serve as an excellent catalyst for a successful energy transition. Consequently, HYDROPOWER EUROPE seeks to address the challenges ahead to fulfil this potential in Europe.

The HYDROPOWER EUROPE forum has launched an online consultation for stakeholders from the hydropower sector, policy-makers, civil society and academia.

The initiative, which is supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme, aims to gather inputs from the hydropower community to define a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda and a Technology Roadmap for Europe.

The agenda and roadmap will aim to guide funding authorities, in particular the European Commission, to prioritise support where it is most needed, to assist the hydropower sector to adapt to the constantly evolving energy system.

Horizon 2020 - HYDROPOWER EUROPE

The transformation of Europe’s energy system creates both challenges and opportunities for the hydropower sector. Hydropower needs to seek out value within the electricity market aligned with other sources of renewable and sustainable energy, whilst operating and building plants in environmentally sensitive and acceptable ways.

The call H2020 LC-SC3-CC-4-2018: “Support to sectorial fora”, item 2: “bringing together stakeholders of the hydropower sector in a forum” provides a unique opportunity to bring together the hydropower community and to develop a Research and Innovation Agenda, and a Technology Roadmap mapping implementation of that agenda. These will support implementation of research and innovation for new hydropower technologies and innovative mitigation measures.
